Maury County Master Gardeners

Gardening

Mission

The mission of the MCMG is to provide research-based horticultural education, while promoting environmental stewardship, via community volunteerism delivered by a dedicated and skilled volunteer network. The MCMG is part of the UT/TSU Maury County Extension Office.

Vision

To provide useful research-based horticulture information to Maury County residents and communities.

Values

Provide research-based residential horticultural education in a responsive and timely manner to extend the impact of UT/TSU Maury County Extension. Collaborate with UT/TSU extension personnel, local municipalities and grassroots and non-profit organizations to offer educational leadership for better horticulture practices and programs across Tennessee. Foster a vibrant and effective learning environment that supports committed and engaged volunteers and attracts new TEMGs to the program. Encourage environmental stewardship, non-commercial food production and youth education across Tennessee through education and outreach. Invest in educational tools and events that provide information to meet the present needs, while laying the foundation to serve Tennessee residents and communities in the future.

How we do it

No stupid questions.

The UT/TSU Maury County Extension receives hundreds of horticulture related calls each year, everything from “when do I plant tomatoes?” to “how do I grow grass in the shade?” Maury County Master Gardeners play a large role in assisting the agent in meeting this demand.

Continuing Education and Fellowship for our MCMG Members

MCMG provides continuing education for our members through presentations at our meetings in the field, hands-on experience at service projects, and conversations between members. Provide fellowship during our meetings and service projects.

Education for the Public

MCMGs man educational booths at local field days, fairs and at retail locations to connect with the public on a one-on-one basis.

Working with Partners

MCMG has partnered with several local organizations:

  • The Polk Presidential Home to manage their historic vegetable garden and to maintain the Polk Home grounds

  • The Ridley 4-H Center to maintain their pollinator garden and to educate their campers in the pollinator garden during their summer program.

  • The Maury County Parks and Recreation Department and the Columbia Breakfast Rotary to establish an educational pollinator garden at Yanahli Park.

How do I become a Master Gardener?

The MCMG operates under an umbrella of the UT/TSU Maury County Extension Office.

Tennessee Extension Master Gardener classes are coordinated through the horticulture agent in Maury County. To satisfy the ever-growing hunger for horticulture and gardening education, classes are offered at varying times every year. Morning classes are offered on odd numbered years (2019, 2021, 2023), and evening classes are offered on even numbered years (2020, 2022, 2024).
